Vlogs

I couldn’t have asked for a more productive day today. I have no idea where all the productivity came from, but I ain’t complaining! 😆 And it’s a Monday, so I’m even happier! 👍

Oh I don’t think I told you: the birthday girl liked the video that I put together for her of her birthday brunch last Saturday! I forgot to add the date and place somewhere in the video, though, that was a bit disappointing. But it was the first ever video I’d ever put together for someone else, so I’m just happy that I got to even do that 😊

I should definitely try and do more vlogs while we’re living here in HK. They’re so much fun to do ☺️ Plus they’ll be a really good way to remember our time here. And like SG, we don’t know how long we’ll have the privilege of living here, so I’m going to try and make the most of it 😆

So maybe I can start tomorrow 😊

Fun and relaxation

N did a ton of karate today, two hours in the middle of the day and two hours later in the evening 😱 I did the complete opposite: absolutely nothing 🤣😔

Well, in terms of exercise, that is. I did manage to cobble together a quick video from yesterday’s brunch, I actually had enough footage to work with 👍 I hope the birthday girl liked it. If anything, it’s the thought that counts 😊 This whole vlogging business is so much fun, though. I really should do more, I enjoy making them so much 😄

N is also doing some research for me in the camera space. The difference between us, though, is that he is willing to spend a lot more money on technology than I am. So the camera he suggested to me is 5x more than what I’m willing to spend 🤣🤣 FIVE TIMES! So I didn’t even look at the specs of the camera. But for that price, I’m sure it’s pretty damn awesome. Or least it better be!

Anyway, I still need to read up on the various options that I have. I still have no idea what I want to buy! 😒

And I finally finished Crash Landing On You, five months later. I don’t know exactly when I started watching that drama, all I know is that it took me months to finish it! Not that it was bad or anything, it was just that I never really had the time to watch it. And when I was watching TV, it was usually with N, and Korean dramas aren’t really his thing, so we usually just watch whatever American show looks interesting.

But I’ve finally finished it, so now it’s time to find a new show. Actually, we’ve also just finished Community, so if you have any suggestions for our new show (or an Asian drama for me 😉), then please let me know! 🙏

Expat life and expat friends in HK

I used the HK Taxi app for the first time ever today. I must’ve registered my details on the app ages ago when I was first told about the app, because it had me down as “English only” in one of the fields 😂 That’s handy. It took ages for a taxi to accept my booking, though, so not sure if it was because I had “English only”, or if they were all just genuinely busy. It was a Saturday, after all.

Apparently you can also pay by credit card on the app, which is very handy because almost all taxis here only accept cash. But that too may cut down the number of drivers who’d accept your booking, as they all seem to like being paid in cash. For tax purposes and all… 😉 I rarely catch cabs anyway, so I’m happy to just pay cash for the odd time that I need to jump in one.

We went to a friend’s birthday brunch today (and the whole reason for the cab), and I filmed some background stuff to add to a future YouTube video. But everyone saw me filming, including the birthday girl, so I feel like I should try and cobble something together for her with the random shots that I took today at the restaurant. I hope I have enough footage to make it worthwhile…! 🤞 Not that I’m a filmmaker by any stretch of the imagination, so it’s not like she’s expecting anything grand (or even good 🤣). But I think it’s the thought that counts 😊 So I’ll see what I can put together tomorrow. Hopefully it’s decent enough to give to her as a birthday gift of sorts!

We then went to a bar at Central for a few drinks as a few of the people at the brunch wanted to watch the AFL game (Essendon vs Carlton). I’m not really into AFL, it’s my least favourite football code (sorry, my Melburnian friends!). They had rugby league playing on another TV, but it was farther away, but I could still make out the two teams playing. I still know the different teams’ colours after all these years 😊

But as I might have mentioned in an earlier post, my favourite football code is rugby union. And at brunch, we happened to sit next to a guy who referees rugby union games around Asia! 😱 How cool is that?!? He was actually pleasantly surprised that I knew the positions in the game. Frankly, so am I 🤣

My gear saga continues

I spent wayyy too much time on my next YouTube video again. My current process is now just taking way too long. All the editing that I want to do with my videos just takes too long to do on my phone now. I really need to move my editing onto my computer 😔

I am also now considering getting a new phone, but specifically for its camera. Basically, I want a new camera. But rather than getting an actual camera, I’m thinking of just getting a phone with a really good camera. I’m all about portability and convenience, so for the same price point, I’d rather carry a small phone and forego the mega awesome features that a larger, more bulky camera would provide.

I am thinking of getting a Huawei. The camera on their phones are apparently pretty damn amazing, and they’re not as expensive as Samsung or Apple. The only downside that I see with Huawei is that apparently you can’t use Google products on them because of the strained US/China relations at the moment 🙄 For crying out loud. But if I’m only using the phone primarily for its camera, does this downside really matter??

And even though it’s not as expensive as Samsung or Apple, it’s still a pretty hefty price at around A$1,300. I’m sure I could get a pretty decent actual camera for that price. So it’s not something I could just comfortably go out and buy tomorrow without doing my research and thinking about it some more.

So that’s where I’m at. What do you think? Is it silly to just buy a phone for its camera? Shouldn’t I just buy an actual camera?? Although size and portability are pretty damn important to me…

Argh! The saga continues…

Eating and more eating

It was a public holiday in HK today, so we just had a relaxing day. We were going to go and have Singaporean for lunch, but when we got to the restaurant, we found out that they’re closed on public holidays. Grrr! Although we should’ve checked this before we left the house 😆 It’s just that most restaurants are open here, public holiday or not, so I didn’t even think to check.

So we ended up having Viet at the restaurant next door. We actually had the choice between ramen, Viet and goose (!), but Viet won out in the end. We walked past the goose place afterwards – I think goose is a specialty here in HK – but it just didn’t really appeal to me, so I’m sorta glad we decided not to try that place 😅 I think I’ve had roast goose before, but this place seemed to cook the goose a different way, I don’t quite know how, but it just didn’t look as appetising. Maybe I’ll give it a go when I’m feeling a bit more adventurous 😄

We then went back home and watched an episode of Community before taking a 2-hour nap 😴 We then headed back out for ramen, although at a different ramen place to the one at lunch (which lost out to viet). We ran into one of N’s workmates on the way to the ramen place, so it was nice to just stop and have a bit of a chat with him and his wife before we went off and had dinner.

It was a nice, relaxing day 😌

Expectation vs reality

I wanted to try using DaVinci Resolve today, that free editing software that I downloaded recently. Unfortunately, though, I was having problems with file compatibility. I assume it all has to do with filming stuff on my iPhone and then trying to edit the video files on my PC. I know I can convert files etc etc but then that’s just adding to my work, not making it more efficient! 😒 So now I’m back at square one, still editing stuff on my phone… 😔 So if anyone has any suggestions on how I can solve this problem, please let me know! 🙏

I was going to get home delivery for dinner from one of the restaurant chains here. I was scrolling through their menu and came across one of their dishes – that has Spam! 😂 So then that got me wanting to have Spam. But I was like, “But I can make Spam myself, why do I need to pay them A$10, then pay another A$10-15 for N’s dish, and then also pay the A$4-5 delivery fee when I can just make it myself?”

For the convenience, that’s why! But I wasn’t tired, I wasn’t starving, nor was this particular dish out of my culinary skill range. So I decided to cook Spam myself and save probably around A$20-25 👍

But we had no Spam! I went through our entire pantry and I couldn’t find a single can of Spam 😒 It was one of those days when I was cursing myself for having such a health-conscious pantry 🤣 But I did find one can of corned beef – from Brazil! That was a bit random, so now I’m wondering where we scored that can of corned beef! 🤷‍♀️ So that was as close to Spam as I got tonight 😂

Awesome

It was one of those days where everything felt right. Nothing was a struggle, everything just went so smoothly. The weather was great: warm with sunny periods but not too humid; buses came as scheduled; and when I went shopping, they had everything that I wanted in stock, and clothing items were all available in my size! And work related stuff all went smoothly too.

Why can’t all days go this smoothly?!?

Because we have to take the good with the bad. The universe must stay on an even keel.

But it’s such a good feeling when we have these awesome days!! 😎

Meh

It wasn’t the most exciting day, nor the most productive. It was basically just meh 😑

The most exciting part of my day was probably watching the second last episode of Crash Landing On You, my current Korean drama that’s taking me foreverrr to finish. It’s not my favourite, but it’s good enough, so I’ll take it all the way to the end 😆 I have quite a few other Korean dramas in the queue, so I’ll be glad to finally finish this one! I feel like I’ve been watching it for months 🙄 Well, it probably has been months, since I only watch an average of one episode a week, if that 😂

Oh and I started watching a tutorial on using DaVinci Resolve, that free editing software that I downloaded on the weekend.

So yeah, these were the most exciting parts to my day. I hope you had a more interesting day than me! 🤪

Too hot

I was thinking of going to Causeway Bay today, one of the shopping areas in HK. But N went out to run a few errands this morning, and while he was out, he was basically complaining about how hot it was today, hinting that he didn’t really want to go out and do anything in this heat. So we just stayed home with the aircon on and watched a bit of Community 😂 And besides, we figured everyone and his dog would be out celebrating Father’s Day, so this probably wasn’t such a bad idea anyway! 😆

(Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! I hope you guys had a great day 😊 )

I also downloaded DaVinci Resolve, the free version of this video editing software. I’m getting a bit tired of trying to edit my videos on my phone, the whole process is just taking wayyy too long now. So I thought I’d try this free version on my computer and see how I go with it. Apparently even the free version has a ton of features for the average creator, so I figured I’ll just try it out and see how I like it before I fork out any money for the full suite of features that I may not even use anyway for the type of videos that I make (and my current skill level! 😅). So I’m very excited to try it out this week! 😄

Looking for efficiency

OMG I’m so exhausted. I spent pretty much all day working on my next YouTube video. I decided to edit a totally different video from the one I started yesterday, so I knew it would take me ages to finish the video starting from just the raw footage. But I managed to do it 😅 And at least I now have my next video half done too 👍

It was good that N went on the junk, though, so I could just work on my video all day. And now that my video is done, we can just go and do something together tomorrow 😊

I really do need to become more efficient in my video making process, though. I think each step in the process is still taking forever, and I want to do more and more things in each video, which is also adding to the time taken to make a video. Maybe I can just focus on one step each week and see how I can be more efficient during that step when making my video that week. Yeah, lemme try that for next week’s video 👍

But for now, I need to crash, because I’m just so freaking exhausted! 😓 Have a good night, see you back here tomorrow 😊
