Easter extra-long weekend: day 1

We were going to go and do Dragon’s Back today, a popular hiking trail trail here that is supposedly one of the easier ones to do. I will be the judge of that and tell you what I think hahaha From someone who actually doesn’t like to hike and will whinge when there is even the slightest incline, you will get my honest opinion! ๐Ÿ˜œ I might have mentioned this before, but I only do hikes for the destination. If someone can winch me all the way up to the top, then I’ll take that option every time! ๐Ÿ˜‚

We started doing the hike, and I was already ready to whinge. It was hot and humid, and there were a ton of people on the trail. Well, it is a public holiday, after all, so I already expected this. But still, it’s a different matter when you actually see it and experience it ๐Ÿ˜’

We then got to a fork in the road: we either do the trail or do the easier (and shorter!) walk to Big Wave Bay beach, and then just chillax on the beach for the rest of the afternoon. We did the latter ๐Ÿ˜‚ It was really nice ๐Ÿ˜Š Although the beach didnโ€™t quite live up to its name: it was flat and calm as. Not sure how surfers can surf here… Maybe the waves only come at certain times of the year?? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Big Wave Bay Beach

We got home at around 5pm and decided to pick up some dinner on our way back. We walked past this shop that apparently sells yum cha items for takeaway! O.M.G. This just blew my mind. I can order my favourite items here whenever I want! And because it’s takeaway, it’s sooo cheap. My favourite yum cha dish is like less than A$4 for 3 pieces ๐Ÿ˜ฑ We’d normally pay at least double that if we go to an actual restaurant. I’m so happy we decided to stop by and check out this place!

And by around 8pm, we were both exhausted and ready to go to bed ๐Ÿคช We were thinking of doing the proper trail tomorrow, but given how tired we are right now, I’m not sure if this is a good ideaโ€ฆ!

My long to-do list and a purchase update

I got up relatively early this morning feeling really pumped. I must’ve had a really good night’s sleep! ๐Ÿ˜† I wrote down everything that I wanted to do today, as I usually do in the morning, and it came to 10 things ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Errr, yeah right. As if that was going to happen. And in terms of the urgent-important matrix, this is the breakdown of those 10 things:

Urgent AND important – 5

Urgent but not important – 0

Important but not urgent – 5

Neither important nor urgent – 0

And where were the 5.5 completed items in the above matrix?

Urgent AND important – 4

Urgent but not important – 0

Important but not urgent – 1.5

Neither important nor urgent – 0

So not bad. I did attend to 4 out of the 5 urgent AND important items. But Thursday is my busiest day, so I don’t know why I thought I would magically have all the time in the world today to get all of the items done ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And by the time the evening rolled around, I was totally shutting off, getting ready for the Easter long weekend ๐Ÿ˜† So yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking. I think it was my keen bean-ness early this morning that made me think I’d be superhuman and be mega-productive today.

I spoke really quickly to my mum this morning: they bought their new TV and it was delivered today! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ That was a very quick delivery! Didn’t I just speak to her yesterday about their planned purchase?? How did they order the TV and get it delivered all within 24 hours?! Efficiency is not a very Aussie thing! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I was very surprised. I only spoke to her briefly, so I’ll have to get more info from her about it next time.

N had dinner with some workmates, so in the evening, I just watched some of my favourite YouTubers for inspiration. I don’t watch YouTube for entertainment (apart from watching music videos). I watch YouTubers for educational purposes first and foremost. And I like them. Something about their personality and/or the way they deliver their content appeals to me. And so I continue to watch more of their stuff because I like them and also for the content that they produce. I also need to start watching more of their videos with a critical eye, to learn how I can improve my own videos. There is so much to learn, and I don’t think I spend enough time trying to improve with each video. Something else to add to that to-do list! ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜œ

A possible new purchase and my language analogy

I spoke to my mum briefly today. Apparently they’re thinking of buying a new TV! She’s been wanting to buy a new TV for a while now, and I think they found a good deal recently. Good on them. They’re both retired now, and they’ve been spending a lot of time at home, thanks to the ๐Ÿฆ  ๐Ÿ˜’ So they’ll get good value out of the new TV. I’m sure they’re going to have a ton of questions about setting it up, though. And I’ve whinged here before about how much fun it is setting up technology via a video call… ๐Ÿ˜’

And I had my Chinese lesson today. It was a tough one: I heard about the H&M debacle in China from my teacher today. It was the first time I’d heard about the incident, so it was very hard to understand what happened when hearing about it in Chinese! But I just read a news article on it – in English ๐Ÿ˜‚ – and I basically understood the general gist of the story during my lesson today, woohoo! So I learnt a ton of new words as a result of today’s lesson ๐Ÿ‘

But I’m now learning words that are not very common (e.g. ‘boycott’!), so they’re getting harder and harder to remember. Not to mention the sheer number of words that I’ve learnt, and trying to keep as much of them in my memory. I see it as sorta like having a fishing net, with all the words being kept within this language fishing net, if you will. And regular practice shrinks the size of the holes in the fishing net, allowing fewer and fewer words to fall out of the net. And practice also makes the size of the ‘fish’ (words and phrases) bigger and bigger, making them easier to pull out when you need them. And the number of ‘fish’ in my net is also growing, and so more fish are also falling out, as a result of the additional pressure put on the net.

Ah, the fun of learning a foreign language! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Feeling good

I had one goal today: write the script for my next YouTube video and film it. I did that – and then some! Woohoo! I totally did NOT expect to be that productive today ๐Ÿ‘ So today, I did what I was hoping to have done yesterday ๐Ÿ™„ Oh well, whatevs. Either way, it’s done, and that’s all that matters. It doesn’t matter when I actually did the work, just as long as it was done ๐Ÿ˜ Now it’s time to edit, and I’m hoping that I can finish that tomorrow. There are only two more workdays this week, and Thursday is my busiest day, so I’d rather get all my editing done tomorrow rather than having to add to the busy-ness on Thursday.

I bought dinner from this place that N recently discovered. It’s this cosy little restaurant that maybe only has around 5 tables all up. I went to go pay, and the waiter asked me if I could pay in cash. The owner manager had just left, and apparently the wait staff can’t operate the credit card machine without the owner manager ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ What’s up with that?? The bill was something like HK$148, and I had something like HK$143 in my wallet. A HK$100 note and the rest in coins. I literally emptied out my wallet ๐Ÿ˜‚ The waiter said that was fine and let me take my food, but I still felt bad. I didn’t want her to have to pay the extra HK$5 out of her own pocket. I don’t know if she’d actually have to, but I didn’t want that to happen if it did come to that. It’s only HK$5 (~A$1), but still, that matters for some people.

The restaurant is only 5-10 minutes away from home, so I walked back, dumped all my stuff, grabbed a HK$10 note and walked back to the restaurant and paid her extra. She told me to take my change – all my coins were still on the table ๐Ÿ˜‚ – but I said not to worry about it. I thought it was nice of her to just let me take the food earlier, so this was a tip for her, in a way.

Maybe next time we can actually dine in, now that dine-in services has been extended to 10pm here ๐Ÿ‘ Oh, and 7 cases today! We’re staying below ten cases! Yayyy! Suck it, ๐Ÿฆ ! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Lack of productivity and planning

It was one of those days where I was all keen bean at the start of the day, ready to do a ton of work, only to end up ticking off just one thing off my to-do list by the end of the day ๐Ÿ˜” How depressing. I was hoping to get some more stuff done today because I will lose Friday and Monday because of Easter. But I ended up doing even less. What is up with that?? ๐Ÿ˜’ Hopefully I can have a more productive day tomorrow ๐Ÿคž

Speaking of Easter, we left it too late to do a staycation ๐Ÿ˜” The hotels that I was hoping to stay at are now all booked out. Plans A, B and C. Danggg. Youโ€™d think Iโ€™d learn by now that I need to book in advance. And with the ๐Ÿฆ  numbers improving here (weโ€™re averaging probably around fewer than 10 cases per day now – woohoo!), people are starting to go out again. Hence why the hotels that I want to stay at are all booked out! ๐Ÿ˜” So weโ€™ll probably just go out and do day trips to an island or two, and just wander around and explore this city.

My second missed day

I missed writing in here yesterday. I think that was the second time I missed writing in here ever since I started this blog. That’s pretty damn impressive!

The reason I missed it this time was the same reason I missed it the first time: I was sick ๐Ÿคฎ The first time it was the flu; last night, it was motion sickness. We had a crazy cab driver on our way back from a friend’s place yesterday, and his rickety old cab didn’t help make the trip any smoother ๐Ÿ˜’ And coupled with my headache, it didn’t make for a fun trip whatsoever. I was actually counting the seconds to distract me from the possibility of throwing up in the cab, “one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousandโ€ฆ” ๐Ÿคฃ I think I got to around 300, so roughly five minutes! I don’t know how accurate my counting was, though, given how sick I was feeling. It was quite quick though, so it wouldn’t have been that far off that. He was driving like a complete maniac too, remember!

And luckily he was, because as soon as we entered our apartment building, I knew I was going to throw up. I managed to make it into the apartment and to the toilet, so all good on that front, at least ๐Ÿ˜‚

So yeah, that was why I didn’t manage to write in here last night! I actually woke up a few times in the middle of the night and contemplated writing in here, but I wasn’t fully awake to do so, unfortunately.

But I’m all good today. Not that I did much, though. I did manage to go for a bit of a walk along the promenade by Victoria Harbour. They’re starting to open more and more of the promenade, and so we walked to another recently opened area in Wan Chai today. I can’t wait until they fully open up the area. It’s going to be such a nice place to hang out ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ambitious and motivated

I just discovered that I hadnโ€™t seen a few comments to some of my posts here, OMG ๐Ÿ˜ณ I feel so bad that I didnโ€™t respond until now. I apologise if you were one of the people who commented on one of my posts last year and I only just replied back today! ๐Ÿ˜”

Thereโ€™s this one YouTuber that I follow because sheโ€™s quite inspiring. Sheโ€™s built her freelancing business to quite a successful one in just a few years. Iโ€™ve been thinking about setting up my own business for a while now, but today, sheโ€™s motivated me to actually make this happen ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

So I did a ton of research about how to set up a website and how to create an email list, and also thought a bit more about what type of digital products I could sell. And I learnt a marketing term today: a lead magnet! And I already have an idea for my lead magnet! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ OMG I feel like Iโ€™m learning so much at the moment. Itโ€™s great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

So Iโ€™ve set a goal for myself to have my website up and running in the next week or two, and to have my lead magnet all set up and ready to get people in to sign up soon after that. But once they sign up, what happens then?? LOL So many things to think about – and then do! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Thatโ€™s my short-term goal. My slightly longer-term goal is to have my first digital product all created and ready by the end of June. OMG thatโ€™s only three months away. Ambitious, I know, but for some reason, having this self-imposed deadline is really spurring me on to actually make this happen.

And now that Iโ€™ve told you my plans, I feel like Iโ€™m committing that little bit more to this ambitious goal ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Iโ€™ll keep you posted on my progress!

Too many questions?!?

It’s now past 1am and, as you can imagine, I am really tired. It was my fault, I stayed up watching YouTube videos for the last few hours. N went out for dinner with one of his mates, and so when he came home, we continued watching some more videos together ๐Ÿ˜† I would’ve stayed on the couch and watched even more if I could keep my eyes open. They were just shutting themselves for me ๐Ÿ˜‚

What was I watching, you ask? Various camera reviews, and general info about the Sony range of cameras. I am totally geeking out on cameras right now! Not that I am going to buy one any time soon, since the one that I want is so damn expensive ๐Ÿ˜”, but I want to have done all my research for when the time finally comes.

Does it make sense to go from my little point and shoot to a fullblown ‘proper’ camera? Will it be like going from a little Hyundai hatchback to a Ferrari, when I am really only just learning how to drive my little hatch?? Is it too big of a leap, or will I just grow into the new car/camera? Or is it just not a fair comparison and you really just can’t compare them??

Or am I just asking too many questions in my half-asleep state of delirium?? ๐Ÿ˜‚

More delights

I have been able to type for most of my life. I probably learnt how to type when I was around 12. So I can actually type without really thinking about where my fingers need to go. I can close my eyes, say the words in my head, and my fingers will somehow know where to go. If anything, it’s actually faster if I close my eyes, because I don’t have the screen as a distraction. I then start visualising where my fingers are moving on the keyboard hahaha I don’t know what’s better, visualising it or actually seeing the words being typed on the screen. How are my fingers doing that?? And it’s not like I’m going “OK, now move your finger to the F and now to the I, then the N, then Gโ€ฆ” etc etc. I can be thinking about something else, like how sunny it is today, and somehow my fingers will still find the right letters. It’s really odd! Seriously, how did I learn to do that?!? This is my delight for the day ๐Ÿ˜Š

I had my Chinese lesson today. We talked about:

  • How the appointments for the German vaccine have been cancelled here because it has been found that the vials were not sealed properly ๐Ÿ˜’
  • How our landlord is asking us to pay his legal fees without even consulting us beforehand; and
  • The Mr Tickle book that I borrowed from the library recently – in Chinese ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Obviously, my version in Chinese didn’t come out as nicely as this ๐Ÿคฃ It was more like:

  • The small bottles from the German company were bad, so the government cancelled our appointment;
  • The person who owns this house is asking us to pay his lawyer’s fees;
  • I borrowed this book from the library.

We then went on to discuss each point in turn, focussing mainly on the first two points. So you can imagine just how difficult this lesson was! But itโ€™s all about communication, not perfect grammar, and I got my message across, thatโ€™s the main thing. Sure, itโ€™d be nice if I had perfect grammar, of course, but Iโ€™m not studying every single day for hours on end. So given the limited amount of time that I do spend studying the language, Iโ€™m quite happy with my progress! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Maybe we can talk about the Mr Tickle book next week. Hopefully I would have finished it by then!

N and I went out for lunch again today. He took me to a different place today, a Viet place that he and a few of his mates from work go to quite regularly because it’s so close to their office. I don’t have Viet very often, but I’ve had it twice in as many days so far this week. Let’s make it three in a row tomorrow, shall we?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Don’t tempt me, I can easily do it! ๐Ÿ˜œ

There’s one thing that I realised today about Aussies: we like to pay each other out. I don’t know if this term is a specific Aussie thing, but just in case it is, it means to make fun of each other or to insult each other, all in a joking, harmless way. We like to make jokes about things, and poke fun at things. We’re just very easygoing people ๐Ÿ˜Š

I am currently reading a book called The Book of Delights by Ross Gay, and I am absolutely loving it. It is not the type of book that I would usually read, but I am so glad I decided to try something new. This seems to be a recurring theme for me lately! And it’s actually bringing a lot of delight into my life. I think I’m going to keep this up, this try-something-new thing, and see what other delights it will bring ๐Ÿ˜Š

So this realisation about us Aussies being very easygoing people who can poke fun at each other – and also be able to take it from others at the same time – is one of my delights today ๐Ÿฅฐ

I also spoke to my mum late this afternoon / early evening. I hope I brought some delight into her life as well today ๐Ÿ˜Š
