Happy to be the weirdo

I had a good productive evening. My sesh at the gym was really good. I did a few basics on the treadmill, as per usual. I had one guy on the treadmill next to mine as I was doing Ballroom basics, and then a new guy replaced him when I switched over to Latin πŸ˜‚ I still wonder what people think when they see me do these basics on the treadmill. Afterwards I do actually dance a bit in the small space available near the equipment, so hopefully people put two and two together! Not that it matters, I’m happy to be the weirdo at the gym πŸ€ͺ

And then when N came home from karate, for some reason he had decided to only speak Chinese for the rest of the evening. Sometimes I think to do this, but it is so much effort that once I say a sentence, I then revert to English pretty much straight after that. But for whatever reason, he persevered tonight, and so we had a good – and very challenging – practice session! πŸ‘ We probably said a bajillion things incorrectly, but that’s ok, it’s all about getting the message across to the other person, and I understood him most of the time, which is the whole point of language. Native speakers and teachers can correct us as we go along this language journey, but we have to make the mistakes first in order to be corrected. Ah, it’s all part of the fun 😊

Our two sports

We went to the second day of the karate comp today, but just to the morning session. They had the official ceremony this morning, which was odd, as I would’ve thought they’d have it at the beginning of day 1?? Perhaps one of the officials wasn’t available to attend yesterday or something, and so they moved it to today.

We went and had lunch with a few of N’s mates from karate, and then after that, we just went home and took a nap before our first proper dance training session since we moved to HK 😱 It wasn’t a complete disaster, we didn’t forget everything πŸ˜‚ N remembered more of the Ballroom choreography while I remembered more of the Latin, which doesn’t come as a surprise since he prefers Ballroom and I prefer Latin πŸ˜† It was good to get back into it, nonetheless. Plus the room booking fee is way cheaper here than in SG, and for a much larger room: we’re basically paying the same amount here as in SG, but in HK dollars (S$1 is about HK$6 – so wayyy cheaper!). Something that is actually cheaper, for once! And the room was a decent enough size that we could somewhat practise our Ballroom, something which we struggled to find in SG. This too is quite surprising, given the lack of space in this city.

Good size room, good enough even for Ballroom πŸ‘

Afterwards, we then just went to Shake Shack – not quite the best choice in food after a training session! πŸ˜‚ But it was nice, my first time eating at a Shake Shack in HK πŸ‘

Earphones and Asian Dramas

We went and had yum cha in Wan Chai today. There’s a computer centre in Wan Chai, not sure if I’ve mentioned it before. We like going there for all our electronic needs. I needed a new pair of earphones. I wanted to get a wireless pair, as it’s hard to practise dancing without headless earphones, as I have to hold my phone the entire time, and I can’t move my arms around as easily, which is necessary in Latin. We found a pretty cheap pair, as I don’t really need anything fancy, especially if it’s really more for when I’m practising. I could easily lose it, or break it, so an el cheapo pair is perfect πŸ‘Œ

And so I used them tonight at the gym. It doesn’t have much of a bass, but like I said, good enough for my purpose. I felt so free today! πŸ˜„

And we finished off the evening with another episode of the Cantonese drama, The Exorcist’s Meter. It’s not a bad drama. For some reason, it’s taking us forever to finish it. Oh, I know why: because N has been travelling so much for work lately! Ugh. He’s in HK all of next week, at least. I am currently juggling about four Asian dramas at the moment, it’s a bit insane πŸ˜‚ And I’m not making much headway on any of them as I’ve been busy working on my goals lately! Which isn’t a bad thing 😊

Balance

I decided to go and have cake at Lady M today, and noticed that they had osmanthus tea on their menu. I had never even heard of this tea before we moved to HK, and now I see it everywhere. It’s in sooo many things here. The funny thing for me is that I actually find the Chinese word for osmanthus (ζ‘‚θŠ± guΓ¬ huā) even with tones easier to say than ‘osmanthus’! It’s such a tongue twister! So today, I ordered and said pretty much this: β€œCan I have the pistachio mille crepe and can I try the ζ‘‚θŠ±θŒΆ?” πŸ˜‚ She had to repeat the tea to make sure she got my order right, as I probably threw her off by mixing English and Chinese 🀣

The fun and enjoyable time I had at Lady M was then soon wiped out by a shite trading session πŸ˜” You’d think I’d learn by now, but no, I keep repeating the same damn mistakes over and over πŸ˜’

I took out my frustration at the gym and had a pretty good session there tonight. I did a few Jive kicks, which were a real killer, but definitely something that I need to do more often to help boost my stamina. I should end each gym session with one song’s worth of Jive kicks. And then work my way up to two songs, then three songs, then who knows how many songs! πŸ˜†

I’ve actually been so focussed on my goals lately that I have barely had the chance to go on the usual social media sites, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc. I should make an effort to log in more often, and get the latest on what’s happening in the lives of my family and friends. I tend to be all or nothing when it comes to my goals, but I think a more balanced approach would be better and more sustainable over the longer-term. But with my detailed schedule now and achieving a good momentum with my goals, I feel like all the progress is just feeding itself and I just want more of it! πŸ˜†

A little bit of progress

We had quite a relaxing Saturday, despite a rather early start to my day – I got up at 7am 😲 That’s early for someone who’s not a morning person!

We went and had yum cha πŸ˜‹ and then went home via the vet to pick up some medicine for Kitty. We then just chillaxed at home for a while before N went to karate, while I went to the gym. I did some more samba to that Dura song that I’m obsessed with at the moment. I’m going to milk this song for as long as I can, as it’s apparently making me practise samba a whole lot more than I otherwise would! πŸ˜‚

And I also spent some time on Tandem, that language exchange app. I probably spent more time chatting in English than in Chinese today, as I was just too tired to focus for too long in Chinese. I helped people with their English instead 😊

So a bit of progress on a few of my goals today, so I’m happy with that 😊

A successful day

So it seems like you can feel the humidity quite a fair bit in this city… It’s only just the start of spring, and yet I can already feel the humidity, interesting… I think N is not going to enjoy the other three seasons of the year, then. He hated the SG weather, I don’t think he ever got used to it, and now we may effectively be going back to SG type weather…! πŸ˜†

He came back from Taipei today, and so of course the aircon has been on in the house ever since he arrived πŸ˜† It’s going to be the same as SG on this front, I am guessing. I, on the other hand, am perfectly comfortable without the aircon, so of course now that it’s on, I have to wear a jumper around the house. Much like our routine in SG. At least from a weather perspective, it’s almost as if we never left! YEAH! πŸ‘

And my tweaked schedule for today worked amazingly. I ticked off almost everything that I wanted to do today, in terms of the tasks that are helping me reach my various goals. It was sooo good. It was perhaps the most productive day I have had in a long time. So I will definitely be bringing this schedule idea into next week too πŸ‘

I came across this song somehow called Dura, by Daddy Yankee, and it is my song of the year so far – I’m in love with it! I had it on repeat at the gym today. I was going to use the elliptical machine as warm-up, as I usually do, and turned on some music to keep me company. I decided to listen to Dura, and as soon as it came on, I was like, “stuff the elliptical, let’s do some samba!!” πŸ’ƒπŸ» And off I went, spending the next half an hour working on different parts of our samba routine, with this song on repeat the entire time πŸ˜† I have forgotten just how exciting dancing can be when I find the right music. It brings me into a whole different world 😌

At this point in time, this song is the answer to Q16 for my future 2019 year in review 😊 I will have to start my draft for the year, before I forget any answers that I can already write down now. It’ll be a better representation for my year if I periodically add to it throughout the year anyhow, rather than trying to rack my brain at the end of the year, trying desperately to remember what happened in the preceding twelve months. So one question down, 34 more to go… 😳

Our last comp for 2018

I got up at 6:15am today 😲 I actually wanted to get up at 6am, but I’m still somewhat happy with my effort. It did mean that I missed out on eating breakfast, as the comp today officially starts at 8am and our first event was pretty early in the program. We got to the venue at 8am, and the music wasn’t even on yet, so obviously official proceedings hadn’t even started yet. But the late start meant that they ran behind schedule for the rest of the day, finishing more than two hours late by the end of the day session.

So that meant a lot of waiting. We actually didn’t dance too much today: we either danced a straight out final for events with fewer people; or we didn’t make it to the final for those with more competitors. Plus for each event, I don’t think they played the music for too long as they were running so far behind. I’m not sure if I pushed myself hard enough on the dance floor today, or if I’m just getting fitter, but I didn’t feel like I was completely spent at the end of the day like I normally do. The former might have contributed to the mediocre results today. Not to mention the lack of regular training these past few months, since we’ve been flying to and from HK to organise this move! πŸ˜‚

We went and grabbed burgers for dinner after the comp – our first proper meal of the day at 6:30pm 😲 I needed something sinful. We’d just been surviving on fruit, chocolate and energy gels the rest of the day! And my BFF these past few days: adrenalin πŸ˜†

So we’re done with comps for the year. And when we resume sometime next year, we’ll be doing HK comps, and perhaps more comps in North Asia. Wow. New dance experiences around the corner. That’ll be fun!

Oh and this morning, as I was watching some random event at the comp, someone came up to me and tapped on the shoulder. It was the dancing doctor! She just came around to tell me that my test results were ok πŸ˜… That was very nice of her. She didn’t have to do that, as I’m seeing her on Monday anyway, but I appreciated it nonetheless. But she slunk away straight after she told me, as I think she was so embarrassed being seen in her dance costume. I completely understand. It’s very surreal when two of your very separate worlds collide! πŸ€ͺ
