Relaxed and carefree

I woke up today feeling so relaxed and carefree. It’s a Saturday, and we have no Chinese class, no dancing competition, no dance lesson, nothing. We were free πŸ˜‚ I sometimes forget what it’s like to have a free day, until one rolls around and greets me warmly with open arms πŸ€—

We took our time leaving the house, simply because we could 😊 I read a bit more of one of my other books, Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty. The book is set in Sydney, so in similar vein to Crazy Rich Asians which is set in Singapore, it was cool reading all the familiar places in Sydney that I know intimately well. Harbour Bridge, George Street, The Rocks, the Fish Markets, Anzac Bridge… I felt like I was almost back there. It doesn’t take much effort for me to conjure up images of the city and visualise myself going around. I know it too well. So I could easily picture the characters in the book walking/driving around and basically just leading their fictional lives.

We then went and had lunch at this Japanese restaurant down the road. I think this place will become one of our regular haunts. The food is really good. Plus it’s owned / run by Japanese people, so they’re very polite. And of course I can practice my Japanese while we’re there 😊

They also have a collection of Japanese manga on their shelves, which customers can read while they’re in the restaurant. I have come to think that reading manga is one of the funner ways to learn a foreign language. I just need to find a series to get into, which is not only good for someone learning the language, but also a genre that I would really enjoy – and hence persevere and push through the obvious reading difficulties!

After lunch, we made our way to the annual Pet Expo! I love going to the Expo, if only just to see the competitions that they hold. Today we happened to sit in front of an Aussie judge who was judging some of my favourite breeds: Maine Coone, Exotic Shorthair, Persian, and British Shorthair. Only problem is, N is allergic to cats! He even reacts to Kitty sometimes πŸ˜” He was saying how he should’ve brought a mask with him to the Expo today 😷 Well we did sit right in front of the judge, so that probably didn’t help matters!

After the Expo, I went home to rest while N went over to our friends’ place for dinner. I was invited too, but since his wife and kids were still overseas, I figured I’d give the two boys some boy time πŸ˜‚ Plus I wanted to get a bit more rest, since this cold is still lingering around 🀧 And we have a comp in a week’s time, so not much resting is going to happen between now and then, so I figured I should take any opportunity to rest up while I can.

Remember the daily mantra that I mentioned back in January? Well I completely forgot about it (already! 😳), and only just remembered it last night. So I reinstated it today: “no trading”. I wasn’t allowed to read anything about trading, no books, no blogs; I wasn’t allowed to review my trades; and I wasn’t even allowed to think about trading. I’m getting unhealthily obsessed, and that’s not a good thing. So I’m telling myself to take the day off. Heck, probably the whole weekend off. My brain needs to switch off and have absolutely nothing to do with trading for just a few days; I want to come back to it fresh on Monday.

So I’m distracting myself this weekend, gaining traction on my other goals instead 😊

All dolled up

I’m now all dolled up for the comp tomorrow πŸ˜† My nails are done and my tan is on. And my dance bag is pretty much packed. Argh, so much hassle just for a comp. I always wonder, before each and every one, why we bother doing them! I know it’s all about improving and learning from each one, but is it worth all this stress and effort?! πŸ€” The early morning start; the caking on of make-up to the point where I end up looking comical (and I still always underdo it!); the fake tan that makes me look like an Oompa Loompa… Whyyy??!? Maybe I just don’t have much of a competitive streak. Nor do I like to perform. So again, why do we do them?!? 🀣🀣 I’ll just try and focus on the learning and improving….

I had a mediocre trading day today, which probably isn’t lending itself to a positive mental attitude going into this comp! I have to let that go – the work day is over – and now I just have to focus on getting through this comp. And maybe just focus on the dinner afterwards hehehe We’re catching up with (non dancing) friends after the comp, no doubt we’ll build up a good appetite just in time for dinner 😊

I already have my mantras too: “Attack!” for Latin and “relax…” for Ballroom. Apparently I don’t do enough of each in the respective style. And yes, I’m also well aware that the two words are on opposite ends of the scale! Fantastic, isn’t it?! πŸ˜‚

Wish us luck!

β€œConnect”

So my chosen mantra for the day: connect. I thought this was an appropriate word for several reasons:

1) We had Chinese class this morning, and the whole point of learning a foreign language is to “connect” with people;

2) We caught up with a friend for coffee this afternoon, so just “connect”ing with him;

3) We were invited to a dinner and dance function tonight, so just “connect”ing with new people as well as a few friends from dancing who also went tonight 😊

My mantra also had another unintentional effect on my day: rather than thinking I have to trudge through class half asleep on a Saturday morning, by remembering my mantra for the day, I could reframe it by saying that “I am here to learn to communicate in Chinese in order to “connect” with other people”.

So I’m putting down day two of introducing a mantra to my day as an overwhelming success 😊 Now time to think of a mantra for tomorrow…

My mantra for the day

I got another cool idea from the Happier podcast: a daily mantra. It’s sorta similar to the one-word theme for the year, but this one is for each day. I like this too, it makes me focus on what I want to achieve during the day, and it’s a very quick way to remember what I want out of the day.

So today I chose “finish”: I wanted to finish doing some stuff around the house; finish my Chinese homework and also finish the training modules for my trading. Ambitious, yes, but a very appropriate word, don’t you think?! And no, I didn’t finish everything, but I got through a helluva lot of it! 😊 Now I have to come up with a mantra for tomorrow / the weekend. I don’t think I’ll choose the same word, it just doesn’t sit right for our typical weekends… Lemme think about it and I’ll let you know tomorrow what I choose πŸ€”

The weather in Singapore this week has been ridiculously COLD. It’s Singapore. It is not known for its cool weather. So when the temperature hovers all day – ALL DAY – in the low 20s, then you know we’re in bizarro world. A cold snap in winter. Seriously. This has to be the coldest January we’ve experienced since moving here. Heck, I’m wearing jeans and a cardigan! Highly unusual, as my default attire is shorts and a t-shirt. My wardrobe has not been designed for this freezation weather πŸ˜‚

It’s even made the news, that’s how crazy this is πŸ˜‚
