Asian dramas and languages

I came across this on Twitter today, which I really needed to see. I’ve been mentioning my shite trading the last few days, and I’ve been feeling rather dejected with my recent results. So seeing this has actually perked me up a little. Maybe I should make a printout of this and paste it up on the wall, so I can see it every day… 😊

I finished my current Korean drama today, Devilish Joy. I really enjoyed the last episode – in complete contrast to the very first one! The first episode was so bad that I actually gave up on the series initially, but then decided to give it a second chance, as I couldn’t find anything else better to watch. I’m so glad I gave it a second chance, as every subsequent episode was way better than that first one! πŸ˜‚

But now I am back to feeling empty again, with no Asian drama to keep me entertained. I would like to watch a Chinese drama next, to help me with my listening skills. But it’s only the Korean dramas that are luring me in! Damn, why are their dramas so good?!? πŸ˜†

I’m reading Benny Lewis’ Fluent in 3 Months, it’s my non-fiction book at the moment. It’s given me a few tips so far, and is motivating me to push on with my Mandarin. In fact, it’s making me want to venture into Korean and Cantonese now as well! The former because of all these Korean dramas that I’m watching at the moment 😊 and the latter because we’re currently living in a Cantonese speaking city. And of course continue to improve on my existing Japanese knowledge. Never mind the fact that these three languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) are notoriously the hardest to learn (along with Arabic) for a native English speaker 🀣🀣 Of all the languages in the world, why do my target ones have to fall into this hard basket?!? 😩 So let me continue reading his book and see what other tips he has about learning foreign languages…

Shiteness and a bit of indulgence

I read a few old blog posts from last year, around about the time when we were getting ready to leave SG and move to HK. This post in particular made me re-live all the stress from that time 😩 And not a long enough time has passed yet for me to be able to look back at this time with fondness. It was only just a few months ago, so I still feel all the stress from that time when I re-read these posts!

I went to Flying Pan for brunch, that 24-hour breakfast place in Central. I still can’t believe it is literally an all-day breakfast! It is just sooo good! I felt like something sweet afterwards, so I decided to go to Lady M for a slice of cake 🍰 I was feeling rather indulgent today, obviously 😊

And then after yet another shite trading session, I watched a few more episodes of Devilish Joy, my current Korean drama, while N went to karate. I’m glad I gave this series a go, as it has definitely improved since the mediocre first episode. I was almost ready to give up from that first episode, actually, as it really just wasn’t that appealing. But then it improved right at the very end of that episode, and it has just gotten better ever since. Ah, these dramas are so addictive! ☺️

Content

We went and had lunch in Kowloon with a friend from Oz, and then just wandered around Elements mall afterwards, checking out what stores they have there. I was still on the lookout for a replacement black handbag, as the straps on my current one are literally falling apart, to the point where it is now rather embarrassing walking around with it πŸ˜‚ But somehow, I found the replacement bag today 😲 I still can’t believe it, after looking for aaages now. Apparently it’s a new product in their range, so it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, I think. Happyyyy 😊😊

We then just went home and watched the second half of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the movie that we’re up to in the Marvel series, followed soon after by Avengers: Age of Ultron. Both weren’t too bad, actually, these Marvel movies keep surprising me 😊

And I watched some more of Devilish Joy, my current Korean drama. It’s not bad too, a light-hearted rom com, which is a nice break from all the intense dramas that I’ve been watching recently 😊

We didn’t get to go to the gym as we were hoping to, so we’ll have to make more of an effort to go tomorrow πŸ’ͺ

It was a fun, relaxing day 😊

Still trying to find our feet

We’re both still trying to find our feet in this new city. We haven’t yet found our new local joint, our go-to place for when we don’t feel like cooking and just want a quick and dirty meal nearby. We haven’t found a dance studio yet either; a new hairdresser; a new doctor; a new favourite shopping mall; and I haven’t found where to buy my Japanese goods that I’ve gotten used to having on hand in SG… The list goes on. Plus we’ve been so focussed on our respective work that we haven’t really done much else! Hopefully we’ll start getting into a good rhythm soon enough 🀞

We watched the Friends episode tonight where they make New Year’s resolutions. It’s still one of my favourite episodes, and is still hilarious to this day. This year marks the episode’s 20th anniversary OMG. I can’t believe it (this episode and the series as a whole) was released a whole generation ago. The show is now getting a whole new batch of fans in the form of millennials 😲

And I decided to give Devilish Joy a go, and make it my new Korean drama. It’s not bad, but definitely not on the same level as Sky Castle or The Last Empress. It’s more a light-hearted rom com, with a bit of amnesia thrown in 😊 That’s not a bad thing, because the previous two that I watched were pretty full-on and crazy intense. I hardly ever felt like I was “relaxing” in front of the tv, if you know what I mean. So this will be a good break from all the stress that the previous two series brought into my life! πŸ˜‚
